Huawei's foldable smartphone delayed for three months

What you need to know

  • The newest Huawei Mate X's release is being delayed by three months.
  • Huawei claims that the delay is not connected to the U.S. Entity List.
  • The new Mate X is a 5G device that is also foldable.

The Huawei Mate X was set to come out this month, but is now delayed until September 2019 (via the Wall Street Journal). The Mate X is a foldable smartphone that also supports 5G and runs Android.

Huawei has run into several issues, including having to delay the launch of a device due to the U.S. Entity list which bans American companies from selling technology to certain companies. But Huawei's head of corporate communications, Vincent Pang, stated that the delay of the Mate X is not connected to the U.S. Entity list. Instead, Huawei is going to work on improving the folding screen. Pang said that the device is going through certification tests with multiple carriers and expects testing to be completed in August.

Sadly, you can't upgrade the RAM on the Ryzen-powered Huawei MateBook D

Best answer: You can't upgrade the RAM on the 14-inch, Ryzen 5-powered Huawei MateBook D as it's soldered in, but you can at least upgrade the SSD and the Wi-Fi card if you wish.

No RAM upgrades possible

Getting inside the MateBook D 14 is extremely easy: simply undo the nine screws on the base and pop the panel off. However, when you're inside, you can't upgrade the RAM because it's soldered in. The 8GB of dual-channel 2400MHz DDR4 RAM is what you're going to have to live with.

MrMobile's review of the LG gram 17 makes me miss my ultra-light laptop

I've been using Apple laptops since high school, and even though my 2018 MacBook Pro is powerful enough to handle my 4K video production workflow with ease, some of my fondest memories with a laptop were with my old MacBook Air.

Sure, it was wildly underpowered, even for its time, but the portability and battery life were incredibly; I couldn't believe how lightweight it was, and the battery lasted me hours longer than my current setup, which made it a perfect writing machine. Even though it's larger than I typically prefer for a laptop, the LG gram 17 takes me back to those days, and MrMobile's video review makes me want to go out and buy one.

Unlike my MacBook Air from years back, the gram 17 has a great-looking display with a fairly sharp 2560x1600 resolution. It has 8 hours of continuous battery life, and a full set of ports, including three USB-A ports, HDMI, and Thunderbolt 3 — hey Apple, taking notes? There's even a MicroSD card, though admittedly I don't see myself taking much advantage of that.

Being a videographer for Android Central, I do a lot of overnight trips for press events, where it's important for me to be able to travel light while still packing enough gear to product good-looking content. That also means a lot of walking around from hotels to venues and back, which means every pound in my backpack counts, so the ultra-lightweight nature of the gram 17 is super appealing to me.

Is Lenovo IdeaPad S940 available with a 4K display?

Best answer: Absolutely. The Lenovo IdeaPad S940 is available with a gorgeous 14-inch 3840x2160 UHD 4K display with 500 maximum nits of brightness, but you can also get it without the 4K. This display is an absolute knockout, but users will need to watch their battery usage.

The benefits (and drawbacks) of choosing 4K

With the Lenovo IdeaPad S940, you have two options when it comes to the display: a standard 1920x1080 HD display with 400 nits of brightness, or a gorgeous 3840x2160 UHD 4K display with 500 nits of brightness. Both displays are 14 inches wide, and both of them are designed with In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology, which offers the best color accuracy and viewing angles out of all display styles.

As you'd expect, the quality of the UHD 4K display is a massive cut above what the standard HD screen has to offer. Images and video look significantly sharper on the 4K display. You'll also be able to up the brightness of your laptop much more with that screen, as it offers a maximum brightness that's a full 100 nits brighter than the HD screen.

This is how you suspend Windows 10 BitLocker to perform system changes

Are you using BitLocker drive encryption on your PC? Before trying to apply new firmware, hardware, or Windows 10 updates, follow this process to avoid issues.

On Windows 10, BitLocker is a security feature that allows you to encrypt the entire system drive (and external storage) to protect your documents, pictures, music, videos, and other files from unauthorized access if your device gets stolen or lost.

Although BitLocker Drive Encryption is a useful feature (especially for mobile devices, such as laptops and tablets), it has a drawback. If you enable encryption on a system drive, performing a Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) or Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) updates, changing hardware, or upgrading to a new version of Windows 10, you may run into issues, such as having to enter a recovery key during startup, because BitLocker will think that the device is being tampered with.

However, you can prevent problems while using encryption by suspending BitLocker on a system drive to successfully perform firmware, hardware, or Windows 10 updates in at least three different ways, using Control Panel, PowerShell, and Command Prompt.

In this Windows 10 guide, we walk you through the steps to suspend (and resume) BitLocker on your device to prevent issues during system modifications.
